Been (been.app), from REBR AS, has 1M+ downloads on iPhone and Android. You tap a country and it fills in. The free passport shows countries, continents, UN members, and recent trips.

Where Been Shines

• Speed: You can mark a lifetime of travel in a few minutes.
• Offline map: The world map is bundled in the app, so a plane cabin still works.
• Cross-platform sync: Apple or Google sign-in keeps iPhone and Android in sync.
• Regions (Premium): 1,000+ states, provinces, prefectures, and counties across 50+ countries. England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland can count separately while the UK still counts once toward UN members.
• Shareable passport image: One tap to a branded map card.

Where Been Falls Short

• Places: Free Been is a country (and, with Premium, region) checklist. It is not a restaurant or hotel log.
• Photos: There is no camera-roll import that rebuilds trips from geotags.
• 3D globe is paid: The globe screenshot that sells the app is a Premium feature.
• Notes are paid: Private notes per country require Premium. Free Been will not hold the "why this country counts" story.

Been uses de-facto borders and labels disputed territories rather than picking a political side. Your percentage is a share of the list Been lets you collect, so two apps will rarely show the same number.

Deep Dive: Atlasi

Atlasi is built for the gap Been leaves: the specific spots inside a country.

You still stamp countries — 227, including territories such as the Faroe Islands and French Polynesia. Then you log entries as Food, Stay, Place, or Experience. Google Places fills in the address. You can publish a list as a public link. Photo Import scans your camera roll, clusters nearby geotagged photos, and suggests places to confirm.

Where Atlasi Shines

• Actionable data: A friend can follow the list, not guess from a green Italy.
• Photo Import: Past trips come from photos you already took, not from memory.
• Privacy default: Trips stay private until you publish a list or trip.

If you never log places, Been's free tier is the cheaper way to keep a count. If you do log places, Atlasi's free cap (10 entries per trip) is the limit that matters, not the country map.

The Verdict

Choose Atlasi if:

• You want the country count and the restaurants, stays, and experiences inside it.
• You want your camera roll to rebuild the trips you forgot to log.
• You would rather share a list than a colored map.

Choose Been if:

• You want a percentage of the world in under five minutes and nothing else.
• You need Android, offline, or a 3D globe.
• State and province tracking is the next layer you will actually use.

Use both if: Been holds the tally and Atlasi holds the places. That split is cleaner than forcing one app to do the other's job.
