Your camera roll is a travel log you never agreed to keep. If Location Services were on, those photos already know which countries — and often which blocks — you stood in. Rebuilding history from that data is faster than tapping a world map from memory, and more accurate than a blank note titled "places I have been."

What Photos Can Recover

A photo helps when all of this is true:

  • It is in the library you grant (on this iPhone, including iCloud originals the system can fetch).
  • It still has GPS (or at least a location the Photos app stored).
  • You are willing to treat that coordinate as evidence of a visit, not of a flyover.

It cannot recover:

  • Film trips, downloaded Instagram saves, and screenshots
  • Years you shot with location off
  • The name of the restaurant if you only have a blurry street and no nearby cluster Atlasi can match
  • Childhood countries with no digital photos at all — stamp those by hand

Recognition from a full country list still matters for everything the library missed. Photos are the accelerator, not the court of appeal.

Before You Scan

  1. Pick a visit rule. Airport-only GPS should not auto-stamp a country. Does a layover count is the short version: airside connections no, landside yes.
  2. Know your list. Atlasi's grid is 227 countries and territories. A photo in Hong Kong stamps Hong Kong, not "China, close enough." How many countries there are explains why your number will not match a 195-country app.
  3. Turn Location Services on for Camera going forward. This process only helps the next decade if new photos keep coordinates.

How Atlasi Photo Import Works

The flow in the app:

  1. Grant photo access.
  2. Atlasi scans for geotagged photos on the device and clusters nearby shots (a plaza of 40 photos becomes one place, not 40 pins).
  3. It suggests a Google Place for each cluster. You can cycle alternatives or search by hand when the top suggestion is wrong.
  4. You confirm the clusters that were real visits. Skip the airport, the flight, and the neighbor's house in a city you did not mean to log.
  5. Atlasi creates trip entries with those photos attached, tagged as Food, Stay, Place, or Experience.
  6. The country on your passport grid updates from the trips, not from a mystery heatmap.

Clustering is local. Place suggestions need the network, because matching a cluster to a venue is the step that makes the log useful. Apps that only count countries from EXIF never have to do that, which is why they feel instant and why they stop at a number.

How to Review Suggestions Without Lying to Yourself

  • Skip flyovers. A wing, a cloud, a GPS hop over a country you did not enter.
  • Skip airside clusters. FRA, DOH, SIN as a gate — not a visit if that is your rule.
  • Split mixed days. A cluster can glue a hotel to a restaurant next door. Confirm both if you want both; do not accept a wrong venue to save a tap.
  • Do not require a photo for every country. Manual stamps still exist for the analog years.
  • Stop at the places you would recommend. Ten entries per trip on the free tier is a feature: it forces the useful ones.

After the Import

Open the country. If the trip looks like a pile of unnamed pins, you confirmed too loosely. If it looks like a list you would text a friend, you are done.
